Poinsettias for Christmas

One of the quintessential holiday flowers is the Poinsettia. Originally from Mexico, this gorgeous plant works well as a cut flower in arrangements, too. If you do choose to use the blooms in a floral design, after cutting the stem,  seal the cut end immediately by either dipping in boiling water or holding over a flame for fifteen seconds (use an oven mitt to protect your hands). The cut flower will last about a week in a vase of water or wet floral foam. California is the top Poinsettia producing state and over $220 million worth are sold during a six-week period each holiday season. Learn more about caring for Poinsettias.
